The rollout of 4G equipment for Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) began in September 2023, marking a significant step toward modernizing the state-owned telecom company. By October 31, 2024, a total of 50,708 4G sites had been installed across India, with 41,957 of these sites operational and delivering services.

 Notably, the equipment deployed is 5G upgradable, ensuring future readiness for next-generation telecom technologies. This update was provided by the Minister of State for Communications, Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, in a written response to the Rajya Sabha.

The minister also emphasized the alignment of this rollout with the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, under which BSNL has prioritized the use of indigenously developed 4G equipment for its nationwide deployment. This reflects the government’s push for self-reliance in technology and infrastructure development.

In response to a separate query regarding strategies for BSNL's revival, the minister stated that the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) has been engaged to provide recommendations. The consultancy has already submitted an interim report to BSNL’s management. 

The report includes key suggestions such as accelerating the 4G rollout, improving service quality, and introducing innovative solutions like a generative AI-based chatbot to enhance customer support. These measures are expected to play a critical role in strengthening BSNL’s market position and operational efficiency.
